About the Elantra

The Elantra is a compact car manufactured by the South Korean automaker Hyundai.

Launched in 1990, first-generation models succeeded the Stellar and was intended to compete with the likes of the Vauxhall Cavalier and the Ford Sierra.

Taking an engine from Mitsubishi, the Elantra could achieve 0 to 60 mph within 9.5 seconds.

By 1995, the second generation had been introduced with some countries receiving the same car but with a different name, the Lantra.

These cars were much more curved in appearance with an entirely different grille and oval headlights.

There were four petrol engines available; a 1.5-liter, 1.6, 1.8 and 2; and just one 1.9-liter diesel; all could me mated with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic.

Fast forward to the seventh generation, and the Elantra is an entirely different looking vehicle; when tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, these new versions scored ‘Good’ for all categories such as side impact, roof strength, head restraints and seats.

Having competed with popular vehicles in the past, alternatives to the Elantra now consist of the Chevrolet Cruze, Ford EcoSport, Kia Forte, VW Jetta, Nissan Sentra, Toyota Corolla, Subaru Impreza and the Kia Soul.

Usual fault codes for the Elantra are:

  • P0017 – A fault code related to the camshaft position correlation, this can be caused by a number of things and so it’s advisable to consult a mechanic for the exact diagnosis.
  • P0455 – There is an evaporative emissions control system, detected by the engine’s computer.
  • P0420 – Signaling poor efficiency of the catalyst system, this code will show when there is an issue with the car’s exhaust or fuel system.
  • P0106 – The output range relating to the MAP circuit is wrong and will ultimately affect the engine’s performance.
  • P0301 – A misfiring in cylinder one, this code cannot pinpoint the exact cause and so the vehicle should be taken to a professional.
