About the Sentra

Created by the Japanese automaker Nissan, the Sentra has had numerous names over the years; the Sunny, Tsuru, Sylphy and the Pulsar.

First-generation models were launched in 1982 as a direct replacement for the Datsun 210.

Originally exported from Japan to the USA, there were four body types available, a two-door, four-door sedan, a five-door wagon and a three-door hatchback coupe.

Trim levels included Standard, Deluxe ad XE, price ranges varied wildly between the models with top-level vehicles offering a vanity mirror, blacked-out windows, a quartz clock and a low-fuel warning light.

The Sentra cycled through the generations, changing styles radically and is still in production today.

Currently, in its eighth generation, the new Sentra is exclusively available as a four-door sedan and was shown first at the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition.

There are three trim levels available for the North American market, the S, SV and SR (for Mexico these increased to four; Sense, Advance, SR and Exclusive).

Unfortunately, Nissan experienced an issue with the Sentra 2021, a recall of 18,857 cars was ordered due to a manufacturing defect in the steering rods.

These could bend creating misalignment in the direction of the car.

There are a number of common engine faults found with this vehicle, some of the codes are:

  • P0101 – Signaling a problem with the mass airflow circuit, it’s advised that a mechanic be consulted to find the exact cause.
  • P0420 – Poor efficiency of the catalyst system.
  • P0171 – This error code shows that there is either too little fuel or too much oxygen in the exhaust.
  • P0456 – A generic code that signifies a small leak in the evaporative system.
  • P0744 – This is one of the many fault codes that indicates a problem with the torque converter.
