Acura – Automatic Transaxle

For Acura, fault code P1740 is logged when the transmission control module (TCM) has detected an issue with the automatic transmission system.

This code indicates that there is a malfunction with the 4th clutch pressure switch circuit.

The pressure switches in an automatic transmission are controlled by transmission fluid, allowing the various components to open and close depending on the driving conditions.

This fault has the ability to severely hamper driveability in terms of gear changes.

Audi – Clutch Temperature

For Audi, fault code P1740 is logged when the transmission control module (TCM) has detected an issue with the clutch temperature sensor. This happens when the signal from the clutch temperature sensor is too high to operate properly.

When the clutch actuator reaches such a high temperature, it can cause a host of issues for the vehicle in terms of both driveability and safety.

With a clutch that is malfunctioning, the vehicle will become very tough to change gears effectively. This can also lead to damage within the transmission.

Jeep – TCC or OD Solenoid Performance

For most of the large American manufacturers, fault code P1740 is logged when the transmission control module (TCM) has detected an issue with the torque converter clutch (TCC) or the overdrive (OD) system.

The TCC is responsible for connecting the engine and transmission in an automatic vehicle. This allows for the two components to mate and transfers the rotational energy on the shafts.

The OD system allows an engine to operate at a lower RPM to increase efficiency. It is almost always activated with the highest gear in an automatic transmission.

This code does not specify which specific system is suffering performance issues. This can mean it will be likely that additional codes will be logged to help pinpoint the issue.

Dodge – TCC or OD Solenoid Performance

Being owned under the same group, fault code P1740 represents the same issue for both Jeep and Dodge vehicles. For more information and similar generic fault codes, see the above description for Jeep.

Chrysler – Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Mechanical Fault

For Chrysler, fault code P1740 is logged when the transmission control module (TCM) has detected an issue with the torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid. Unlike some other similar codes, Chrysler specifies that the issue is mechanical in nature.

The TCC is responsible for connecting the engine and transmission in an automatic vehicle. This allows for the two components to mate and transfers the rotational energy on the shafts.

Because the fault code represents a mechanical issue, it likely represents that the TCC solenoid is faulty or stuck on or off.

See similar generic codes: P0741, P0742

Ford – Transmission System Problems

For Ford, fault code P1740 is logged when the transmission control module (TCM) has detected a general issue with the transmission system.

Unfortunately, this code does not help pinpoint the issue at hand as it is a general fault code. This can mean the cause of the problem requires extensive diagnostics.

It is very likely that this fault code will require expert assistance to find the cause. Additionally, there may be other fault codes logged that can help in this regard.
