Description Icon Long Description

Fault code P0013 is logged when the engine control unit (ECU) has detected an issue with the circuitry for the “B” camshaft located in bank 1.

This code occurs when the variable valve timing (VVT) solenoid or its corresponding circuit has malfunctioned.

The VVT solenoid allows the exhaust camshaft to change its speed in accordance with the engine’s revolutions per minute. This helps improve efficiency and performance at different speeds.

These can also be called oil control valves (OCVs), as they operate via oil.

A short or open circuit condition will prevent the actuator from allowing this change in timing. This can lead to improper timing between the crankshaft and intake camshaft.

The “B” camshaft refers to the exhaust camshaft. For fault code P0013, it is the exhaust camshaft found in bank 1. This is the side of the engine in which cylinder 1 is found. This only applies to V-shape engines.

General Motors brands like GMC are one of the most commonly reported for this issue.

Warnings Icon Other Signs of This Problem

There are various signs that can help give away an issue with an exhaust camshaft. Some of these are shared with other shaft-related issues.

One of the most noticeable signs is the Check Engine light being illuminated.

The engine can run very poorly as well. It can even have trouble starting up, depending on how bad the situation is.

Other performance issues like rough idling and slow acceleration can occur alongside this P0013 fault code.

Along with these symptoms, it is likely that the vehicle will experience decreased fuel economy as well.

Broken Down Icon What Could Be The Problem?

There are several potential causes that can lead to a short or open circuit being detected.

A faulty VVT solenoid is one of the most obvious possibilities. Additionally, the wiring and connections to the solenoid could be damaged or worn. The presence of an open or short circuit can of course also lead to this fault code being logged.

Although somewhat unlikely, any issues with the powertrain control module (PCM) can also cause this error to occur.

Issues with the oil supply can also cause this type of issue. Contaminated or overly thick oil can prevent the VVT solenoids from operating properly.

Fixed Icon Fixes

There are several areas in which a solution can be found for fault code P0013. These are typically either related to the oil system or the electrical components used for VVT.

The first step is to reset the fault codes and perform a road test. If the code is logged again, further steps must be taken.

If the VVT solenoid is faulty or damaged, it should be replaced. Connections and wires should also be checked and repaired if necessary.

Oil should be checked and replaced if it is dirty or too thick. It is important to use the correct oil type and viscosity.

If there are any faults with the ECM, this should be replaced.

Danger Icon Seriousness

Fault code P0013 can be considered severe in terms of seriousness. There is no immediate damage at risk to the various components in the engine, but it can accrue over prolonged use in this state.

However, there are more severe risks involved with any shaft timing issues. If there are other codes present, it is important to ensure they are not serious.

It is best to get this issue resolved as soon as possible.
