About the i20
The i20 first made its debut in 2008 in response to the increasing popularity of supermini hatchbacks. Since then, there have been three generations to be released, with the latest hitting the markets in 2020.
As its name suggests, the i20 sits in the middle of Hyundai’s current hatchback lineup, above the i10 and below the i30.
The 5-door hatchback goes up against some very names in its packed class. Popular rivals include the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo, and Peugeot 208.
Like most Hyundai models, the i20 features the same powertrain in many other models, as well as models sold by Kia. In addition to this, the most common fault codes for these cars are directly related to their engines. This means its most common fault codes can also be the most common found in both its siblings and corporate cousins.
The engines found within the model are reportedly prone to suffering camshaft issues. In fact, the two most commonly searched fault codes are P0011 and P0014, which represent a problem with the intake and exhaust camshafts respectively.
Both of these codes are logged when the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected that the camshafts are over-advanced and that the PCM is unable to self-correct.
Shaft issues are incredibly serious as they can lead to significant and costly damage to the engine. Hyundai owners should be sure to have both of these codes addressed as soon as they appear.
Another common camshaft issue is represented by fault code P0017, which is logged when the PCM detects that the signal from the camshaft position sensor does not correlate with the PCM’s own calculations.
This issue is just as serious as the previous two codes. Timing is one of the most important aspects of a properly functioning engine and, unfortunately, some i20s are commonly affected.
