About the Sharan
A result of a joint venture between the Ford Motor Company and Volkswagen, the Sharan is said to take its name from the Persian word ‘Shahran,’ translating into ‘Carrier of Kings.’
At the time, people carriers were becoming extremely popular, and this Sharan was no exception to this.
Sold alongside its sister vehicles, the Ford Galaxy and the SEAT Alhambra, the Sharan quickly became the fastest-selling multi-purpose vehicle in Germany, (although it was not so popular in the United Kingdom where it received hideous feedback for its customer service).
Second generations looked more robust, where the Sharan’s predecessor had a sharp sloping bonnet and triangular profile, these newer models had a stockier front end.
Two petrol engines and two diesel engines were sold with a combination of either 5 or 6-speed transmission.
Production ended in 2022 after sales had begun to dwindle thanks to the increasingly popular crossover MPVs.
The second and final generation was showcased at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and all models were built at the Portuguese factory, Palmela.
Volkswagen used the Volkswagen Group A6 Platform to construct newer models, a platform that it shares with the Skoda Superb, Volkswagen CC, Volkswagen Passat B6 & B7, Volkswagen Passat NMS, SEAT Alhambra and the Volkswagen Tiguan.
Some fault codes commonly associated with the Sharan are:
- P0403 – A malfunction of the gas recirculation.
- P0411 – This error code shows a problem with the car’s secondary air injection system.
- P0036 – A diagnostic code that indicates that the heated oxygen sensor control circuit is incapable of sending the right information to the powertrain control module.
