About the Sprinter
An extremely popular van, the Sprinter is still sold to this day and can be bought in a number of configurations including a light commercial van, chassis cab and pickup truck.
Over the years, the Sprinter has been sold under numerous monikers like Dodge and Freightliner and won ‘international van of the year’ upon its release in 1995.
Closely related to the Volkswagen LT, the Sprinter sells in numerous markets worldwide and competes with other vans like the popular Ford Transit, Chevrolet Express, GMC Savana and the Nissan NV2500.
There are a number of fault codes associated with the Sprinter, some of which are:
- P0087 – A common fault code for the Sprinter, this means that the fuel pressure is under the desired range and can lead to a misfiring of the engine. Consequences can be a lack of power or a rough run.
- P0299 – Only ever seen in vehicles equipped with either a supercharger or a turbocharger, code P0299 points to an underboost condition and results in an extremely low output.
- P0101 – This fault code tells the driver that there is an issue with the mass airflow sensor, the most common cause is the MAF sensor operating outside of the normal range. Where this fault will not prevent the vehicle from driving, it can lead to excessive use of fuel and will trigger the warning light as soon as the key is turned in the ignition.
- P0088 – Although not extremely common, code P0088 does indicate a serious fault and can make the vehicle unsafe to drive. It can be caused by a few things, a failing fuel pressure, a restricted fuel supply or a faulty fuel pressure regulators.
- P0472 – This error code can really be produced by many issues, from a broken exhaust back pressure sensor to an open in the circuit connecting the PCM and exhaust pressure sensor, a mechanic should be consulted to determine the exact cause. Upon seeing this code, drivers can expect to see the engine losing power, the warning dashboard light illuminated or a crank-no start.
