Description Icon Long Description

Fault code P0380 is logged when the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an issue with the glow plug circuit.

Glow plugs are used in diesel engines to warm up the combustion chamber during the starting of the vehicle. This is done to allow for ignition to occur in the absence of the spark plugs that are found in petrol engines.

Of course, this means that only vehicles fitted with diesel engines can be susceptible to this fault code.

This type of code, along with any other glow plug-related issues, can make it very difficult to start a diesel engine.

Some of the most commonly reported manufacturers when it comes to this issue include Nissan, Ford, and Opel. Again, only their diesel offerings are susceptible.

Warnings Icon Other Signs of This Problem

This fault code can come with a number of noticeable symptoms due to the importance of the glow plugs in a diesel engine. These will almost always be displayed when starting a cold engine.

One of the most obvious signs will be the presence of the Check Engine light on the dashboard. Another light that will likely be present is the Glow Plug/Wait To Start light on the dashboard.

The next symptom is a direct result of the glow plugs not functioning properly. Most vehicles with this code will have noticeable trouble starting. This can be made even worse in cold environments where the cylinders need more heat to fire.

Be sure to look out for additional fault codes that relate to the glow plugs. Codes like P0381, P0382, P0383, and P0384 can all help pinpoint the cause of the issue.

Broken Down Icon What Could Be The Problem?

This type of fault code will typically be linked to an issue that is found within the glow plug system.

One of the most likely causes will be a faulty glow plug. It is also possible that there are multiple glow plugs that are failing.

It is also possible for there to be problems with the glow plug relay and this is what is causing this code.

The circuits for both the glow plugs and the glow plug relay can also lead to this code being logged. This can include a blown fuse.

In some cases, a faulty PCM can be the culprit. However, this will likely be accompanied by a number of additional fault codes.

Fixed Icon Fixes

Fixing this fault code should be done methodically to avoid unnecessary labor and costs.

If there are any other fault codes relating to the glow plugs, these should be addressed first.

One of the first steps in fixing this fault code is checking the individual glow plugs for problems. Any glow plugs that are showing issues should be replaced.

In addition to this, the glow plug relay should be checked for proper function. If it is faulty, it will likely need to be replaced. The circuits for the relay itself also need to be checked for any issues, including shorts and open circuits.

The PCM will need to be updated if running on outdated software. If the PCM is altogether faulty, it should be replaced.

Danger Icon Seriousness

Fault code P0380 is a fairly serious problem as it can hamper the driveability of a diesel vehicle. This is particularly true in colder environments where starting the vehicle is extremely difficult without the aid of glow plugs.

It is a good idea to have this issue fixed immediately, regardless of the surrounding environment.
