About the Forte/Cerato/K3

Known as the K3 in South Korea, the Kia Forte is a compact car available as either a two-door coupe, four-door sedan or as a five-door hatchback.

Unavailable in Europe (due to the Kia Ceed’s popularity), the Forte first launched in 2008 and replaced the again Kia Spectra.

There were a wide variety of engines available, a 1.6-liter, 2-liter, 2.4-liter, 1.6-liter petrols and a 1.6-liter diesel all coupled with a 5 or 6-speed manual transmission or a 4, 5 or 6-speed automatic.

Following safety tests undertaken by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Forte scored exceptionally well, with ‘good’ ratings across the board and an overall five out of five stars.

The second generation launched in 2012, while body style options remained the same (a coupe, sedan or hatchback) new features added included new LED lights with a new interior design focused on the driver’s comfort.

For the American market, there were four trim levels available, the LX, S, EX and the SX, the latter was later offered in a Turbo option.

Things like Bluetooth, USB and auxiliary ports, full audio system, keyless entry and a multifunction steering wheel made up the new technologies installed in these newer models.

Now currently in its third generation, the latest models are stylistically removed from its predecessors and compete against the likes of the Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Mazda3, Toyota Corolla and the VW Jetta.

Some common faults found with the Forte are:

  • P0014 – A generic code that signifies that bank one of the exhaust camshaft is outside of the recommended range set by the manufacturer.
  • P0303 – A number of misfires have been recorded from cylinder three, detected by the ECM.
  • P0335 – A malfunction with the crankshaft position sensor, this can be caused by a number of problems and so a mechanic should be consulted to diagnose the exact cause.
  • P0420 – Poor efficiency of the catalyst system.
  • P0455 – There is a gross leak found in the evaporative emissions control system.
