About the i40
Built as a large family car, the i40 was created and manufactured by the South Korean car company Hyundai.
Launched in 2011, the i40 lasted just 8 years and was unveiled at the Barcelona Motor Show.
Designed at Hyundai’s European R&D facility, Germany, the actual car assembly and manufacture takes place at the Ulsan plant in South Korea.
Available as either a sedan or as an estate, the i40 has a curb weight of 1,372 – 1,682 kg and a 2,770 mm long wheelbase.
Five engine variants were created, a 1.6-liter and 2-liter petrol and a 1.6-liter diesel and a 1.7-liter diesel; all of which could be mated with a 6-speed automatic, 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT transmission.
Hyundai described the new design style as a ‘fluidic sculpture’ that shows long sweeping lines front to back and a low front grille.
Aesthetically, the i40 is indicative of a premium German car design with a chassis indicative of a Mercedes or BMW.
Aside from the German automakers, competitors to the Hyundai i40 can be found in the Peugeot 508, Kia Optima and the Hyundai Sonata.
When plugging in an OBD2 reader, the i40 can show some common fault codes, these can be:
- P0101 – A performance problem relating to the mass airflow circuit operating range. This can happen for a number of reasons and so a mechanic should be consulted to pinpoint the exact cause.
- P0404 – This fault code is generic and points to the engine exhaust gas recirculation system.
- P0087 – Below the specified pressure, the fuel system is not performing correctly.
- P0299 – Found only on vehicles with a supercharger or a turbocharger, this error code highlights a problem with the under-boost.
- P0420 – A fault code suggesting that the efficiency from the catalyst system is not performing as it should.
