About the Impala
Existing primarily from 1957 up to 1984, the moniker Impala continued to have revivals all the way up until 2020.
Created by Chevrolet, the Impala was hailed as the company’s flagship passenger vehicle and enjoyed great success throughout Northern America.
The first generation coincided with General Motors’ 50th year in service and the Impala launched along side limited edition versions of the Cadilac, Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Buick.
Dubbed a premium model, the first examples had an “all American” aesthetic with protruding headlamps and a sweeping back.
After the Impala’s limited edition launch, the full production vehicle went on sale in 1959 and 1960 and could be purchased as a four-door hard top, two-door sport coupe, convertible, station wagon or four-door sedan.
Right-hand drive versions were sold to a number of countries, namely New Zealand, South Africa and Australia, but not for the United Kingdom.
Following the tradition of short-term generational releases, the third generation lasted only 3 years, with the sixth generation breaking the pattern and selling for 8 years. By this time, the Impala looked like a completely different vehicle; gone were the swooping sharp edges and these were replaced by a huge boxy bonnet and angular tail lamps.
Chevrolet discontinued the pillarless hard top due to new emerging safety standards and reports of these types of cars rolling uncontrollably.
Common fault codes that can show from this vehicle are:
- P0010 – Classed as a generic error code, this means that the engine control module has found a fluctuation in the mechanical timing that syncs both the camshaft and crankshaft.
- P0455 – A problem arising from the evaporative emissions control that results in a gross leak.
- P0523 – The pressure of the engine oil is reading at a level that is above the desired setting.
- P0068 – Detections of airflow through the air induction system, this reading is picked up by the mass air flow sensors and alerts to the fact that there are conflicting results.
- P0305 – A misfire was found in cylinder 5.
