About the Polo
The iconic Polo first made its debut all the way back in 1975. Since then, there have been a total of six generations, more commonly known as Marks. The latest of these hit the markets in 2017.
The model has come in a variety of trim packages, but the most notable of these is the hot hatch version, called the Polo GTI or GT.
The model sits below the legendary Golf in terms of the VW lineup. Competition from outside the VW family comes from the Renault Clio, Opel/Vauxhall Corsa, and the equally-iconic Ford Fiesta.
The Polo has been known to suffer some shaft issues. The most common of these is fault code P0016. This code indicates that there is a correlation issue between the signals from the crankshaft position sensor and the intake camshaft position sensor.
Another common issue is P0341, which indicates that there is a camshaft position sensor problem.
If both of these codes are logged together, it is likely that they are both being caused by a faulty camshaft position sensor. This can include electrical faults in the camshaft position sensor circuit. Replacing the sensor is a good idea.
Other potential causes can include timing problems like a stretched timing chain. It is also possible that there may be problems with the engine oil system causing these problems, particularly P0016.
Fault code P0303 is another common issue for the Polo. This code indicates that there is a misfire coming from the third cylinder in the engine.
By far, a faulty spark plug in the cylinder in question is the problem. Changing, or atleast checking these, is always the best first step in addressing the issue. This also applies to the ignition coils for the third cylinder.
