About the Sportage
Created by the South Korean car manufacturer Kia, the Sportage is a sport utility vehicle sold onwards from 1993.
Still in production today, the Sportage initially started life as a compact SUV, and then was later changed to a crossover SUV.
Originally developed alongside the Mazda Bongo, it shared a number of features with other Mazda models of the time.
Assembly plants were located in South Korea, Germany, Russia, Pakistan and China, and initial models were offered as either a 5 door SUV or a three-door convertible.
There were just two petrol engines and one diesel, all 2-liters and these early vehicles sold quite poorly, even in their native land, South Korea.
Second generations sold onwards from 2005 and looked much more rugged than their predecessors. This new Sportage was also a lot bigger, which lead to criticism from fans of the original who felt it had moved away from the very thing that made it unique.
Currently, in its fifth generation, the Sportage’s latest version launched in 2021 and is now built upon the new N3 Platform, which it also shares with the Hyundai Santa Cruz, Hyundai Santa Fe, Hyundai Sonata, Hyundai Staria, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Carnival, Kia K5, Kia K8 and the Kia Sorento.
Available with a petrol, petrol hybrid, petrol plug-in hybrid, LPG, Diesel and diesel hybrid engines, the new Sportage has a wealth of new technology like an automatically adjusting terrain mode, electric suspension, adaptive cruise control, lane centering assist and advanced blind spot collision avoidance.
Five of the most usual fault codes are:
- P0014 – Bank one of the camshafts is outside the desired range, this is found by the ECM and is considered a generic code.
- P0700 – An overall issue with the transmission control, The onboard computer regulates the transmission and its communication with the powertrain control module in a bid to shift gears when necessary.
- P0455 – There is a leak somewhere relating to the evaporative emissions control system.
- P0420 – Low performance from the catalyst system efficiency.
- P0741 – There is an issue with the torque converter clutch circuit performance, either that or it’s stuck in the off position.
