About the Scirocco
Sold across a number of decades between 1974 and 2017, the Scirocco is a 3-door sport compact that is created exclusively with a front-wheel drive configuration.
First generations were built upon the Volkswagen Group A1 Platform along with the Volkswagen Golf Mk1, VW Golf Cabriolet, VW Jetta Mk1, Volkswagen Caddy and the Volkswagen Citi Golf.
Closely related to the Golf and Jetta, the Scirocco was available to purchase in Europe, Japan and North America.
Initial models had 6 petrol engines and the choice of either a manual or automatic transmission.
After taking a hiatus between 1992 and 2008, the last and third generations look incredibly different from their predecessors.
Styling featured a sleek front end with rounded rear arches making an abrupt rear end.
The platform switched to the Volkswagen Group A5 platform and following Euro NCAP testing, the Scirocco achieved 87% for adult occupancy, 73% for children and just 53% for pedestrian safety.
Although officially removed from production, VW has hinted at a new small coupe, explaining that should they ever decide to revive the moniker again, it would only be used in conjunction with a sport two-door coupe.
Sciroccos have a few common fault codes, some of these are:
- P0299 – This fault code is generic and only shows on vehicles with either a turbocharger or supercharger and indicates an underboost condition.
- P0441 – This code shows when the ECU finds an issue within the EVAP, it means that the purge valve is not regulating vapors properly.
- P0087 – A problem with the fuel pressure, it is reading as too low.
- P0033 – Only found in vehicles with a turbocharger or supercharger, this error code indicates a bypass of the valve control circuit. The exact reason for this occurrence will not be immediately apparent and so a mechanic should be consulted to determine the exact cause.
- P0420 – Poor catalyst system efficiency, this usually means that oxygen levels are too low.
