About the Baleno
Used for numerous models over the years, the moniker ‘Baleno’ has lent its name to a rebadged Suzuki Cultus Crescent and a rebadged Suzuki Aerio sedan.
The Baleno as a car in its own right launched in 2015 as a subcompact car with a hatchback styling.
First generations were unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show and were built upon the popular HEARTECT Platform, a platform shared with Suzuki Alto, Suzuki Lapin, Suzuki Wagon, Suzuki Spacia, Suzuki Wagon R Smile, Suzuki Solio, Suzuki Swift, Suzuki Dzire, Suzuki Xbee, Suzuki S-Presso and the Suzuki Celerio.
The Baleno without the additional safety package, scored quite poorly during Euro NCAP testing with just three stars out of a potential five.
Second generations were sold from 2022 and were assembled at the Suzuki Ahmedabad plant with the intention to export to Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.
Just two petrol engines were available, an 1197 cc and a 1462 cc which could be coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission, 4-speed automatic and a 5-speed AMT.
In motorsport, Suzuki created a modified Baleno designed to compete in the Rally di Roma Capitale, this car has a 1-liter turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine.
In the Indian market, sales have been strong and gradually increasing over time, for example, in 2016 107,066 units were sold compared to 2021, with 172,237 orders taken.
Over the years the Baleno has been associated with various fault codes that have plagued it including:
- P0430 – When the ECU finds the threshold performance is too low in relation to the catalytic converter.
- P0171 – Showing either not enough fuel, or far too much oxygen in the exhaust system.
- P0031 – An engine must have a ratio of fuel to air of 14.7 to 1, this code signifies that this ratio is off.
- P0703 – There is a problem with the brake switch B circuit.
- P0128 – Showing that the engine coolant temperature is under the thermostat regulating temperature. Essentially, the engine control manual has found the engine is running at a lower temperature than is ideal.
