About the Leaf
A compact five-door hatchback, the Leaf (as the name would suggest) is an eco-friendly vehicle powered by a battery and manufactured by the Japanese company Nissan.
Launched in 2010, the Leaf was designed for mass appeal, hence the stand family configuration, and care was taken to give the car an aerodynamic styling.
Powered by an electric synchronous motor capable of producing 107 bhp and had a 24 kWh lithium-ion battery.
Following Euro NCAP tests, the Leaf received an impressive five stars out of a potential five, with 89% attributed to adult safety.
Later, the Leaf went on to win the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s ‘Top Safety Pick’ in 2011.
Other awards granted to the first generations were the ‘Green Car Vision Award’ by the Green Car Journal and 2011’s European Car of the Year.
2017 saw in the next generations of Leaf, these vehicles looked incredibly different and production models began to sell in America in 2018.
New safety features were installed like automatic parking, a lane centering system and a system whereby removing one’s foot from the accelerator pedal initiated braking, this meant that the vehicle could be brought to a complete stop without having to apply the brake.
As an electric vehicle, the Nissan Leaf has some competition from cars such as the Kia e-Niro, Jaguar I-Pace, Hyundai Kona Electric, Tesla Model S, BMW i3, Renault Zoe and the Volkswagen ID.3.
The Leaf can cause some of the following fault codes to show:
- P0507 – A fault code showing a high RPM emanating from the idle control system.
- P0301 – A misfire was discovered in cylinder one, this can be caused by a number of reasons and it’s recommended that a mechanic be consulted to diagnose the exact cause.
- P0171 – This error code signals that there is either too little fuel or too much oxygen in the exhaust system.
- P0101 – A performance problem relating to the mass airflow circuit operating range.
- P0420 – Poor efficiency from the catalyst system.
