Detailed Manufacturer-Specific Explanations

Audi – SECONDARY AIR INJECTION SYSTEM PUMP

For both Volkswagen and Audi, fault code P1436 is logged when the vehicle’s primary computer, the powertrain control module (PCM), has detected an issue with the secondary air injection system pump.

The code description for Volkswagen vehicles gives more insight into the cause of this problem. This code relates specifically to an electrical malfunction within the secondary air injection system pump circuit.

The secondary air injection system is used to pump ambient air into the vehicle’s exhaust system. This is done to reduce the number of unburnt hydrocarbons that are able to leave the vehicle.

These systems are particularly necessary for cold environments and starting conditions to reduce emissions.

The main purpose of these systems is to aid the reduction of emissions while the catalytic converter reaches operational temperatures. This means that these systems are found in almost every vehicle with a catalytic converter.

It is very likely that there is an issue within the pump relay circuit. This can be caused by faulty connections or damaged wiring.

Citroën – A/C EVAPORATOR AIR TEMPERATURE CIRCUIT LOW

For Citroen and Peugeot, fault code P1436 is logged when the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an issue with the air conditioning evaporator air temperature circuit.

This code indicates that a low voltage in the circuit has been detected.

The evaporator is a small radiator that is essential to the air conditioning system in a vehicle. It is a heat exchanger that absorbs warmth from ambient air, cooling it to the desired temperature inside the vehicle.

By exchanging energy between the refrigerant within the evaporator and the warmer air passing over the evaporator fins, the air is cooled.

An electrical problem like this with the evaporator can cause the air conditioning system to malfunction. This is because the control module is unable to determine or control the temperature of the evaporator.

The most likely cause of this problem is a faulty evaporator temperature sensor. It is also possible that there is a fault within the sensor circuit.

Additionally, it can be caused by refrigerant levels being too low.
