About the Kona
A subcompact crossover SUV, the Kona is a vehicle built and sold by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai.
Launching in 2017, the Kona takes its name from an area of Hawaii with Hyundai claiming that the name is indicative of the requirements and aspirations of the modern consumer.
Sold in Portugal as the Kauai (because ‘Kona’ is extremely close to a less-than-desirable word in the Portuguese language), the vehicle is Hyundai’s smallest SUV and is constructed upon the B-Segment SUV platform, an altered version of the platform used for the i30.
Offered as either an all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive, the Kona for the American market was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2017 and boasted a wide range of engine configures.
For the petrol variety, the sizes ranged from a 1-liter up to a 2-liter, two diesel engine varieties with both being 1.6-liter in displacement and the petrol hybrid again, both using a 1.6-liter engine.
The Kona Electric is, as the name suggests, a battery electric version that began sales in Europe in 2018 and offered two battery options; 39.2 kWh and 64 kWh.
Top-level trims allowed for lane centering and adaptive cruise control.
For customers looking for an alternative electric SUV, the Kon’s competition came in the form of the Kia e-Niro, Jaguar I-Pace, Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model S, BMW i3, Renault Zoe and the Volkswagen ID 3.
