About the Aygo
The first generations of Aygo models sold onwards from 2005 under the industry code name AB10/AB20 or AB30.
As a small city car, people could purchase the vehicle as either a 3 or a 5-door hatchback from the low price point of €8,500.
There were a number of similar vehicles that were essentially rebadged versions of the Aygo, changes were made to the rear side windows, steering wheel and front stylings depending upon the company – these cars were the Peugeot 107 (then 108) and Citroen C1.
The Aygo’s success and popularity suffered a potential blow when, in 2010, Toyota issued a global recall due to a sticking accelerator pedal.
It was later discovered that only automatic Aygos were affected along with the C1 and 107.
Following Euro NCAP testing, the Aygo received three stars out of a potential five for both adult and child safety.
2014 saw the second generation introduced with display models appearing at the Geneva Motor Show with the strap line ‘go fun yourself.’
Aygos are extremely recognizable thanks to the front end large black ‘X’, a design attributed to Japanese youth culture taking queues from the manga robot ‘Astro Boy.’
With the safety scores arguably low for a car in its class, it’s understandable that potential customers would be better advised to consider alternatives like the VW Up!, Kia Picanto hatchback, Hyundai i10, Fiat 500, Mini Hatchback, Honda e hatchback, Suzuki Ignis or the Smart EQ for Two.
Some fault codes that can show for this vehicle are:
- P0420 – A low catalyst system efficiency.
- P0171 – There is either too little fuel or too much oxygen resulting in an issue with the exhaust.
- P0011 – A generic code, this issue is picked up by the ECM and suggests that the bank 1 intake camshaft is too advanced.
- P0139 – There is a low drop in voltage.
