About the Cupra Formentor

The Cupra Formentor is a compact crossover SUV that Cupra, SEAT’s performance division, manufactures. The model made its debut near the end of 2020 and since its release, there has only been a single version.

It is currently built on the Volkswagen Group MQB Evo platform and features the same 5-door layout found on most crossovers. The Spanish manufacturer offers the model with a choice of either front-wheel or all-wheel drivetrains depending on various trim levels and engine selections.

In the Cupra lineup, it sits below its mid-size SUV sibling, the Cupra Ateca.

The Cupra Formentor goes up against a number of luxury performance crossovers like the Audi Q3, Alfa Romeo Stelvio, and Porsche Macan.

The powertrain options available are based on the trim level chosen. They consist of three petrol engines, a petrol plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, and a single diesel option.

Although it has only been on the market for a few years, there are some problems owners have somewhat regularly had to deal with.

The Formetor’s most common fault code is P0410, which represents a malfunctioning secondary air injection system.

A problem with the secondary air injection system can have an effect on the driveability of the vehicle, particularly when starting the engine in colder environments. This is one of the best ways to identify the problem.

The engine may idle roughly after a cold start. It may also suffer decreased performance like lack of acceleration and backfiring. It is also likely that the exhaust fumes will be black, indicating that the emission control systems in the exhaust are letting out too much fuel.

Thankfully, this is not the worst fault code that commonly pops up as it does not severely affect the car.

The next most common fault code for the Cupra Formentor is P0900. This code indicates that there is an issue with the clutch actuator circuit. It is very likely that there is an open circuit condition causing this fault code.

Any type of electrical issue like this will mean two things. The first is that what the circuit is controlling will not function properly. In the case of the clutch actuator, this can mean the vehicle will be unable to shift properly.

It is also very likely that the vehicle will enter limp mode. This can make it a serious problem.

The second is that the circuit needs to be checked for electrical faults like damaged wiring or connection terminals.

Another fairly common fault code owners face is P0299, which represents an under-boost condition from the turbocharger. This is when the turbocharger is not supplying enough pressure to the engine.

This problem should be fairly noticeable as, again, the Cupra Formentor can enter limp mode.

If it does not go into limp mode, it is almost guaranteed to suffer from very noticeably reduced power when accelerating.

It is very important to get any fault code relating to the turbocharger fixed immediately as there are some expensive parts at risk. Another reason is that the Formentor will not be able to function properly.
