About the Puma
A subcompact three-door coupe, the original Puma was a vehicle that lasted for 15 years and was built exclusively at the Ford Niehl plant in Cologne.
Engines offered were a 1.4-liter, 1.6-liter and a 1.7-liter all with 5-speed manual transmission.
All Pumas are front engine, front wheel drive vehicles with four seats fitted with alloy wheels based on the Mark 4 Ford Fiesta.
In total, over 133,000 Pumas were manufactured with huge popularity found in the UK (at one point there were over 50,000 Pumas registered with the DVLA. Following the success of the Puma in the UK, a number of limited editions were sold to include Black, Thunder, Millennium and the Ford racing Puma. Of the latter, only 500 were created between 1999 and 2001 and were initially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.
Emphasis was placed on the fact that this sporty aesthetic was more than just chassis deep with Ford taking technologies from race and rally programs and inserting them into a road car.
Bodywork on the car was lighter using aluminum where possible with the addition of a strengthened gearbox.
Internally, the standard front seats were replaced by high grip bucket seats to help with fast cornering, and the Ford Racing emblem could be found embroidered within the cabin.
At the time, customers had various vehicles to choose from which had similar attributes to the Puma, such as the Peugeot 2008, Volvo XC40, BMW X1, SEAT Arona, Mini Countryman and the Mazda CX-30.
