About the Equinox
The Equinox initially debuted in 2005 as a mid-size crossover SUV offering from Chevrolet.
There were a total of three generations to be released, with the most recent being released in 2018. The second generation first hit the markets in 2010.
The Equinox was released as the successor for a number of other offerings in the same class. The most notable of these were the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and Blazer. It is also a rebadged version of the GMC Terrain.
Similar competitors from outside of the Chevrolet family came from the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Kia Sportage.
Two of the most common issues that the Equinox has faced are P0011 and P0013. These two codes both represent issues with the camshafts. Both of these codes being logged together likely means that there is a timing issue present.
P0011 indicates that the intake camshaft is over-advanced. This typically is the result of old or dirty oil, meaning this should be one of the first things to check for this issue.
The second of these codes points to a faulty exhaust camshaft position actuator. This was a very prominent problem for the 2012 model with the 2.4 L engine, so much so that a technical service bulletin (TSB) was issued for both the Equinox and GMC Terrain.
As per the TSB, owners need to replace both camshaft position actuators.
A less serious but common issue is P0420. This code indicates that the catalytic converter is not performing properly.
In the majority of cases, this is caused by either a failing catalytic converter or oxygen sensors in the exhaust. Models with higher mileage will require a new catalytic converter due to wear over time.
