About the Rio
Replacing the Pride, the Rio, although created by Kia is sold as a Ford in some countries.
A subcompact car, the Rio was launched in 1999 and during its lifetime has been styled as a five-door hatchback, five-door station wagon and a four-door sedan.
At the time, the Rio was the cheapest car in production in Northern America, a selling point for affordability but the cost-cutting ultimately resulted in criticism of poor quality features and driving experience.
Just three years after its debut, the Rio underwent a facelift with several changes made to the underpinnings of the car.
A more intense upgrade than is typical, the Rio received new overall styling, brakes, suspension and new engines.
Second generations sold onwards from 2005; constructed on a new platform that was used for the Hyundai Accent, the Rio now had a more upmarket trim level, the LX. The LX offered a CD player, air conditioning and power steering and was given a facelift in 2010.
Following testing undertaken by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety the Rio faired extremely poorly, awarded only a two out of a potential five stars for overall safety, side impact points were deemed ‘poor’ as were the head restraints and seats.
Currently, in its fourth generation, the newer Rio examples look markedly different from their predecessors.
For Europe, the Rio is only sold as a five-door hatchback with better safety scores awarded from Euro NCAP (this time awarded five stars and 93% for adult safety.
If potential customers were put off by the original poor safety scores, competitors could be found in the Nissan Versa, Mini Cooper and the Peugeot 308.
The following error codes are common to the Rio:
- P0420 – A code pointing to the low efficiency of the catalyst system.
- P0326 – The knock sensor has registered as outside the acceptable level set by the manufacturer, this is found by the engine control module.
- P0455 – A gross leak has been detected, a malfunction related to the evaporative emissions control system.
- P0441 – This fault code shows an incorrect purge flow.
- P0303 – This code shows when multiple misfires are found by the ECU.
