About the Xterra
The Xterra is a truck-based compact SUV created by the Japanese car manufacturer Nissan.
Production started in 1999 and shared its platform with the Nissan Frontier pickup.
Having lasted just two generations, these models differed significantly but both were tough vehicles that championed utility over luxury, making the strapline ‘everything you need, nothing you don’t.’
Only two trim levels were offered, the XE and the SE. The former had a 5-speed manual transmission and a 3.3-liter V6 engine, or a 4-speed automatic transmission, and in addition to this, the SE had all the optional extras as standard.
A second generation was showcased at the New York International Auto Show in 2005; these were built upon the F-Alpha platform and the standard engine was now a 4-liter VQ40DE V6 producing 261 bhp.
Other vehicles to use the F-Alpha platform were the Frontier, Titan pickup, NV, Infiniti QX56 SUV, Y62 Patrol, Armada and the R51 Pathfinder.
New facelifted models were much larger than their predecessors and had a number of new features added including steering wheel controls, Bluetooth, hands-free phones, apple audio, heated seats and voice recognition.
This Xterra won a number of prestigious awards throughout its lifetime, these included Sport Utility Vehicle of the Year, North American Truck of the Year and 4×4 of the year.
Usual fault codes to find in this pickup truck are:
- P0430 – Detecting that the Catalytic converter performance is below the desired specification
- P0340 – There is an issue with the camshaft position sensor. There could be that the wires connecting to the camshaft position are faulty, or the actual sensor itself is broken.
- P0300 – A misfiring cylinder that could be happening because there isn’t enough fuel being burned, or a spark plug is not working properly.
- P0420 – Low catalyst efficiency, this could be the result of a problematic exhaust system.
- P0171 – There is not enough fuel or there is too much oxygen.
