About the Maxima
The Maxima is a full-sized family car manufactured by the Japanese car company Nissan.
Sold as Nissan’s main sedan in America, the Maxima began production in 1980 as a boxy four or five-door vehicle with a rear-wheel drive setup.
Originally two engine options could be purchased; a 2.4-liter petrol or a 2.8-liter diesel and buyers could mate these to either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.
The first models were sold under the name Datsun Maxima or Datsun Wagon; the latter, as expected was a station wagon and both had the brand-new feature of a warning voice (rather than a beep).
Installed only with a female voice, drivers were reminded to ‘Please turn off the lights,’ when the ignition was switched off.
Over the years sales figures have remained consistent with the numbers dropping off in more recent years due to the popularity of crossover SUV vehicles.
The Maxima that we recognize today was brought out in 2016 and was in its eighth generation after Nissan’s decision to pull the vehicle from sale in 2023.
First shown at the New York International Auto Show, the Maxima looks sporty with sweeping headlights stretching halfway up the bonnet and the side panels.
Now built upon the Nissan D Platform, this vehicle shares its underpinnings with other Nissans like the Murano, Teana, Elgrand, Quest, Altima, Pathfinder and the Renault Laguna III, Renault Latitude and the Venucia T90.
Some common fault codes associated with this vehicle are:
- P0101 – A general code that shows an issue with the mass airflow sensor, this results in an engine performance issue.
- P0171 – A code showing that there is either too little fuel or too much oxygen in the exhaust system.
- P0011 – This fault code indicates that the engine control module has found the bank 1 intake camshaft is outside of the expected range.
