About the Niro
Built by the Korean car manufacturer Kia, the Niro was first sold in 2016 and shares its platform with the Hyundai Ioniq.
Sitting in between the Stonic and Sportage in terms of size, the Niro is available as either a petrol hybrid, or a petrol plug-in hybrid.
As a modern car, the Niro has a number of features such as Apple CarPlay and was the first Kia to have Android Auto fitted as standard.
Safety features such as autonomous braking, smart cruise control, acoustic windshield glass and 7 airbags.
Built at the Hwaseong plant in Gyeonggi, South Korea, the Niro was unveiled first at the Chicago Auto Show.
Although a popular car, it does face some strong competition from cars like the BMW X5 45e, Volvo XC60 T8, Renault Captur, Volvo XC90, Audi Q5 TFSI e, Toyota C-HR, Toyota RAV4, Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid and the Lexus UX.
The plug-in Hybrid variant was offered a full two years after the Niro’s initial release. These models had a dual-clutch transmission in direct contrast to the continuously variable transmission.
Earning the title of the best-selling plug-in car in Denmark, the Niro beat the Nissan Leaf and went on sell 1,113 units by December 2018.
Although it is a popular model you can still expect to see some ODB2 errors to pop up during its life such as:
- P0011 – A generic code showing that the ECM has read that the bank 1 intake camshaft is more advanced than the desired limit.
- P0111 – This code is logged when the PCM finds the intake air temperature signal is not at the desired specification.
- P0420 – Showing a low catalyst system efficiency
- P0340 – This will indicate that the camshaft position sensor is experiencing an issue.
- P0130 – When the engine control module can no longer see any activity from the oxygen sensor, this code will be triggered.
