About the STS
The STS first made its debut as the successor to the Cadillac Seville in 2004. The midsize luxury sedan remained on the market until it was succeeded by the XTS in 2011.
During this time, General Motors released only a single generation of the model. However, like many other Cadillac offerings, there was a high-performance version released called the STS-V. This variant was unveiled a year after the model’s initial release.
Competition for the STS typically came from the likes of the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
Like some other Cadillac offerings, the STS was prone to run lean. This was shown by fault codes P0171 and P0174 being the two most commonly reported issues.
These codes indicate that the first and second bank of the engines are running too lean respectively. Typically the second code would only apply to a limited number of engine configurations, but most of the STS models were fitted with either a V6 or a V8.
It is important to look for additional fault codes that can help pinpoint the cause of this issue. However, being logged together can also be helpful in finding the source.
Owners have reported that a faulty intake manifold gasket is by far one of the most common causes of both codes being logged together. It is also possible that the MAF sensor is failing.
Adding to this issue, fault code P0302 is another common code. This code is logged when a misfire has been detected from cylinder 2.
This can be a direct result of the engine running too lean, so other fault codes can help find the solution again. In addition to this, owners have commonly reported faulty ignition coils.
