About the Century
The Century name first emerged all the way back in 1936, making it one of the oldest in Buick’s lineup. Since then, it has been manufactured intermittently. The modern version was unveiled in 1973 and remained on the market until its discontinuation in 2005.
While on the market, the model saw a total of six generations. Interestingly, the name has been used in China for the Buick GL8 minivan as of 2023.
Upon its discontinuation, Buick announced that the LaCrosse would take over as the flagship model and the successor of the Century.
Competition has included the Toyota Camry and Hyundai Sonata.
One of the most common issues that the model has faced is P0008. This code indicates that there is a misalignment of the first bank of the engine.
There can be a wide number of causes for this issue, but a faulty variable valve timing control solenoid is one of the more common. Replacing this component can result in the code being resolved.
Fault code P0430 is another common issue that some models faced. This code indicates that the catalytic converter in the second bank of the engine is not performing properly. Of course, only Century models fitted with a V-shaped engine can suffer this code as it affects the second catalytic converter.
Similarly, fault code P0420 is also common. This is the same code but for the first catalytic converter, meaning it can affect all models.
In most cases, these codes are the result of wear over time. Catalytic converters need to be replaced at set intervals and neglecting to do so can result in the code being logged. In addition to this, exhaust leaks upstream of the converter can cause these issues.
