About the 86

Launched in 2012, the 86 is a sportscar developed and sold by the Japanese car manufacturer Toyota.

Both the Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ are effectively the same vehicle and the result of a joint venture by both companies.

Assembled at the Subaru Gunma plant, the first generation was sold as the ‘86’ in South America, South Africa, North America and Asia, the GT86 in Europe and the FT86 In Brunei, Jamacia and Nicaragua.

To avoid confusion, the vehicle was referred to as the GR86 in all markets.

The first production models were showcased at the Tokyo Motor Show and had a 2-liter 6-speed powertrain with a curb weight ranging from 1,190 kg up to 1,298 kg.

Constructed with a fixed roof and an aluminum hood to try to reduce the weight, the 86 sold in a number of different versions like the Scion FR-S, 10 Series, Monogram series, Release series 1.0 and the Release Series 2.0. The latter was created in 2015 and had a limited number of units totaling 1000 cars.

By 2021, Toyota had redesigned the 86; still with just one engine on offer these new vehicles had a more aggressive styling and more aluminum in the bodywork to decrease the overall weight even further.

New vehicles used the Subaru Global Platform, along with cars such as the Impreza, Ascent, Legacy, WRX, XV, Forester, Outback and Subaru GT.

Owners can expect to see so of the following error codes:

  • P0420 – A poor performance from the catalyst system.
  • P0456 – A generic code, this occurs when a very small leak is detected in the evaporative system.
  • P0087 – There is a problem with the fuel pressure and is reading too low.
  • P0463 – Translated exactly to ‘fuel level sensor,’ this fault code shows when there is an abnormally high voltage signal emanating from the fuel sensor.
  • P0300 – There is a misfiring cylinder.
