P0087 Fault Code

Long Description

Fault code P0087 is logged when the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected that the fuel rail/system pressure is lower than the allowable pressure range.

Incorrect fuel pressure can lead to a number of issues with the functioning of the engine. The PCM carefully monitors the pressure to prevent this, logging a fault code in the event of an error.

The fuel rail, which is used in common rail fuel injection systems, is a component that is critical to supplying fuel to the various fuel injectors in the engine. The fuel rail sensor is used to signal the amount of fuel flowing through the rail at all times.

All vehicles manufactured since 1990 have fuel injectors, and subsequently fuel rail systems. This means all modern vehicles can suffer from this fault code.

Other Signs of This Problem

Because of the vital role of the fuel rail, there can be a number of noticeable signs of this issue in terms of driveability.

There will also be other signs when it comes to how the vehicle runs. These can change depending on the severity of the problem.

The vehicle is likely to have misfires, run rough, and suffer from reduced power.

It is also possible for the vehicle to unexpectedly stall due to insufficient fuel supply to the combustion chambers.

There can also be changes to the vehicle’s fuel economy.

There may also be other fault codes relating to a lean condition logged. Running lean is when there is too much air and not enough fuel in the air-fuel mixture. These can be codes like P0170, P0171, and P0173.

What Could Be The Problem?

There are several potential things that can lead to low fuel pressure in the fuel rail. These can be faulty parts or a failing fuel system.

One of the most likely causes is a fuel filter that is clogged or defective.

Fuel line issues like clogging or crimping can also lead to insufficient fuel being sent to the fuel rail.

In some cases, the fuel rail pressure sensor circuit could be at fault. This can be a faulty sensor or defects with the wiring or connections.

Other fuel supply issues like a defective fuel pump or high-pressure pump solenoid can lead to this issue as well.

Additionally, wear on the camshaft lobe that drives the pump can also cause insufficient pressure in the system as the pump is not pressurizing properly.

Fixes

Fixes for this fault code will likely be within the fuel system to bring the pressure to the fuel rail back to the allowable range.

However, it is possible that the fuel rail pressure sensor itself is at fault. If the sensor is faulty, it needs to be replaced.

If there is any damage in the sensor circuit, this needs to be fixed as well.

A clogged fuel filter needs to be replaced. Any issues in the fuel line need to be fixed.

If the fuel pump is not functioning properly, it must be fixed. A faulty fuel pump, fuel pump solenoid, or camshaft needs to be replaced.

Fault code P0087 should be considered a serious issue. It can hugely hamper the driveability of a vehicle and cause damage to various parts because the engine will be running lean.
