About the Picanto
A small city car, the Picanto was manufactured by the South Korean motor company Kia.
Launching in 2003, the Picanto has been known by different names, location dependent, with the original moniker, said to refer to the Spanish word for spicy, ‘Picante.’
First displayed at the Frankfurt motor show, the Picanto used an altered version of the Hyundai Getz’s platform and was available as a five-door hatchback.
With just two petrol engines offered, a 1-liter and a 1.1-liter, the Picanto was fitted with a number of premium features (for 2003), such as electric mirrors, remote central locking, electric windows, air conditioning, MP3 audio and a CD player.
Euro NCAP safety tests were a little disappointing, with the Picanto only receiving an overall three stars out of a potential five.
Built upon the Hyundai-Kia SA platform, the vehicle shared the underpinnings with several other cars like the Hyundai Eon, Hyundai i10 and the Kia Ray.
2007 saw a facelift with alterations made to the light clusters and the front bumper, and four years later, Kia brought out the second generation
. These newer models were showcased at the Geneva Motor Show, now designed by Kia’s European team, these cars looked much sleeker.
To launch the new generation, Kia created an ad campaign that shows a number of stills hand-painted onto fingernails. Using 1,200 bottles of nail polish, viewers watched as the cars drove and rotated through these fingernails, with the tagline explaining that Kia had ‘maximized’ a small space.
When error lights display on the dashboard, this can signal fault codes such as:
- P0748 – Irregular pressure found by the solenoid responsible for regulating it.
- P0340 – This error code can be triggered by either corroded wires connected to the camshaft sensor or the sensor itself being broken. Ultimately, it suggests that there is a problem with the camshaft position sensor.
- P0014 – Bank 1 exhaust camshaft is not in the required range.
