Detailed Manufacturer-Specific Explanations

Acura – EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE POSITION SENSOR CIRCUIT HIGH VOLTAGE

For Acura and Honda, P1498 is logged when the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an issue with the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve position sensor.

For this fault code, the PCM has detected that the voltage in the EGR position sensor circuit is too high. This likely means there is an issue with the sensor itself or within its circuit.

The EGR system is responsible for returning small amounts of the exhaust gas back into the combustion chambers. This is done to reduce the emission of gases like NOx.

A fault with the EGR valve position sensor can mean the PCM is unable to determine how the EGR system is functioning. This can lead to increased emissions, as well as decreased performance of the engine.

Jeep – HIGH-SPEED RAD. FAN GROUND CONTROL RELAY CIRCUIT

For both Dodge and Jeep, P1498 is logged when the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an issue with the high-speed radiator circuit.

The radiator fan is responsible for providing cooling to the engine during operation. It is crucial in keeping the engine at the desired operational temperature.

A fault within the radiator circuit can quickly lead to reduced performance, as well as cause overheating of the engine, which can be a serious issue.

This fault code specifically pinpoints that there is an electrical issue in the ground control relay circuit, which can cause the fan to function poorly. This is because the PCM is unable to control the radiator fan effectively.

Dodge – HIGH-SPEED RAD. FAN GROUD CONTROL RELAY CIRCUIT

For both Dodge and Jeep, P1498 represents the same issue. For more information on the problem and similar generic fault codes, please see the above description for Jeep.

Chrysler – EGR VALVE MOTOR COIL ‘3 OPEN OR SHORTED’

For Chrysler, P1498 is logged when the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an issue with the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve motor.

This fault code specifically refers to an open or short circuit found in the circuit for the third coil. This is typically a result of a defective coil. This means special attention should be given to this third circuit.

The EGR system is responsible for returning small amounts of the exhaust gas back into the combustion chambers. This is done to reduce the emission of gases like NOx.

Some EGR systems make use of a stepper motor to allow for further regulation of exhaust gases.

An issue with the circuit can result in decreased performance and excessive emissions being released into the surrounding atmosphere.

Honda – EGR VALVE LIFT SENSOR HIGH VOLTAGE

For both Acura and Hona, P1498 represents the same issue. For more information on the problem and similar generic fault codes, please see the above description for Acura.

See generic codes: P0406

Kia – EGR STEPPER MOTOR MALFUNCTION – CIRCUIT 3

Interestingly, fault code P1498 represents the same issue for Kia and Chrysler, despite the two brands being under different ownership. For more information on the problem and similar generic fault codes, please see the above description for Chrysler.
