Fault code U0184 is a communication-related code that indicates that there has been a loss of communication with the vehicle’s radio or infotainment system.
Modern car radio systems are far more complex than what is required for just a car radio. These systems are required to provide information to the driver, as well as play music. This is particularly true of infotainment systems.
Like most electronic systems on a car, communication for the radio goes through the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. A loss of communication between the CAN bus and the radio is what causes this code to be logged.
All modern vehicles can suffer from this code, but Chevrolet, Jeep, Ford, and Mitsubishi are among the most commonly reported.
Other Signs of This Problem
The signs of this fault code will be fairly obvious in most cases. The most obvious sign will be that the radio is not working properly.
The radio itself may be unresponsive, provide no sound or no information.
It is also possible that the infotainment screen will be blank or otherwise malfunctioning.
In some cases, there will be other similar fault codes logged that can help pinpoint the cause. Be sure to look out for codes like U0001 to U0027, as well as U0185.
What Could Be The Problem?
The causes for this issue will almost always be electrical in nature.
One of the most likely of these is an open circuit in either the positive or negative wires of the CAN bus. It is possible that there is a short circuit in the circuit. It is very likely that both of these conditions will cause a number of other communication fault codes to be logged.
Another potential cause is the presence of electrical faults in the radio circuit. This can include damaged wires and loose or damaged connections. In addition to this, blown fuses can also lead to this code being logged.
A faulty radio can also be the cause of this issue as it will not allow proper communication.
Fixes
If the radio is functioning properly, it is a good idea to clear the code to check whether it will be logged again or not. It is also a good idea to check for technical service bulletins from the manufacturer regarding issues like this.
Another good practice is to address any other communication-related fault codes before this.
Thereafter, the radio circuit needs to be checked for electrical faults. Any issues need to be fixed accordingly.
Fuses should also be checked. Any blown fuse will need to be replaced.
Additionally, the CAN bus wires need to be checked for short or open circuits. These will need to be repaired as well.
If it is determined that the radio or infotainment itself is faulty, it needs to be replaced.
Seriousness
Fault code U0184 is by no means a serious problem. It does not pose any risk to any components or systems in the vehicle. The only issue is that it prevents the proper function of the radio or infotainment system.
Owners should have this issue fixed whenever they feel, if at all.
