Fault code P0322 is logged when the engine’s primary computer, the powertrain control module (PCM), has detected a fault signal from the distributor or crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.
This can be a result of an erratic, interrupted, or unexpected signal from these sensors.
The PCM uses the signal from the distributor and crankshaft sensors to determine the engine position. When this fault code occurs, the PCM automatically assumes that these components are misaligned.
This code more likely will be logged when there is an issue with one of these sensor circuits, rather than an actual problem with the timing of these parts.
Audi, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen are some of the most commonly associated manufacturers when it comes to this fault code.
Other Signs of This Problem
There will typically be some noticeable symptoms commonly associated with this fault code. These can range in severity, depending on the cause of the problem.
The most obvious sign will be the Check Engine light will be illuminated on the dashboard.
In some instances, the vehicle will not start at all, even though it is cranking.
If the vehicle starts, it may demonstrate poor performance in various ways. These can be things like misfiring, stalling, and a noticeable lack of power.
It is also very likely that fuel consumption will be increased.
Be sure to look out for other fault codes related to this issue. These can be codes like P0320, P0321, and P0323.
What Could Be The Problem?
As mentioned, it is likely that there is simply an issue within one of the sensor circuits, rather than an actual timing issue present.
A faulty CKP sensor, camshaft position sensor, or distributor sensor can cause this issue as they are sending erroneous signals to the PCM.
Similarly, any issues within their circuits can cause this issue. These can be things like damaged and frayed wires or loose connections.
A defective distributor can also lead to this P0322 fault code being logged.
In some instances, a low battery charge could be the cause.
In rare circumstances, the PCM could be faulty or running on outdated software. This can also cause this issue. However, there will likely be other fault codes logged if this is the issue.
Fixes
In most cases, the fix for this P0322 fault code will be focused on the sensors in question.
One of the first steps to take is to check that the battery in the vehicle is still in good working order with a proper charge.
Thereafter, the sensors need to be checked for working conditions. If they are defective, they need to be replaced.
Similarly, their circuits should be checked. Loose connections and damaged wires need to be fixed.
If these parts are all in working order, the distributor itself should be checked for faults. If it is faulty, it should be replaced.
If all of these parts are free of issues, it is possible that the PCM is the source and needs fixing. This can either be in the form of a software update or replacing the PCM.
Seriousness
Fault code P0322 should be considered a relatively serious issue. It can severely hamper the driveability of the vehicle, even to the point of not starting at all.
It is a good idea to have this problem fixed as soon as possible.
