Description Icon Long Description

Fault code P0234 is logged when the engine’s primary computer, the powertrain control module (PCM), has detected an issue with the forced induction system.

This occurs when the PCM has detected excessive boost coming from either the supercharger or turbocharger.

Turbochargers and superchargers are types of forced induction systems that provide compressed air to an engine. This is typically done to increase the efficiency and power of a smaller engine.

These components are not standard for all vehicles as they can be complicated and expensive. However, with the trend towards reduced carbon emissions and better fuel economy, they are becoming very common in most cars.

Code P0234 is commonly associated with manufacturers like SEAT, Volkswagen, and Volvo. However, it can only affect cars with forced induction systems like a supercharger or turbocharger.

Warnings Icon Other Signs of This Problem

There can be some significant symptoms when it comes to an overboost condition. These will typically be experienced at different revolutions per minute (RPM) depending on whether it is a supercharger or turbocharger.

Turbochargers typically provide boost at relatively higher RPM, depending on the size. Superchargers usually provide boost at lower RPM. This can help narrow down when the problem is experienced.

The most obvious sign will be that the Check Engine light is illuminated.

It is also very likely that the vehicle will enter failsafe or limp mode to prevent damage to the components as a result of excessive boost.

It may be possible to hear unusual sounds from the turbocharger.

Other signs could be similar fault codes like P0235 to P0250. Code P0299 represents the opposite issue where there is insufficient boost detected.

Broken Down Icon What Could Be The Problem?

The potential causes for this type of issue will be located within the forced induction system itself.

One of the most common issues is a failing or stuck wastegate. This prevents excess boost from being released from the system.

A faulty boost sensor can also cause this fault as it is incorrectly reading an excessive boost condition. Other sensors including the manifold air pressure (MAP) sensor could also be providing a false reading to the PCM.

In some cases, a failing turbocharger can cause an excessive boost.

Any blockage in the exhaust can result in increased back pressure, causing this code to be logged.

Fixed Icon Fixes

Most of the fixes for this issue will be mechanical in nature. It is also possible that some parts will need to be replaced – effectively fixing this P0234 fault code immediately.

The wastegate should be checked for proper operation. If it is stuck or not opening properly, the wastegate solenoid may need to be replaced. A damaged wastegate valve should be replaced.

The wastegate control hose should be checked for a proper fit.

Any faulty sensors need to be replaced. These include the boost sensor and the MAP (or BARO) sensor. Their circuits also need to be fixed if there are any damaged wires or loose connections found.

The exhaust should be checked for clogging. If any is detected, this must be fixed.

If the turbocharger or supercharger is failing or damaged, it should be fixed or replaced.

Danger Icon Seriousness

Fault code P0234 should be considered a serious issue. It is possible that the vehicle will enter limp mode, which will render it nearly undrivable. There is also a serious risk to expensive parts in the forced induction system.

It is recommended to have this issue fixed immediately.
