Description Icon Long Description

Fault code P0026 is logged when the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an issue with the intake valve control solenoid circuit.

The valve control solenoid is a part of the variable valve timing (VVT) system in modern vehicles.

The VVT system allows for the intake camshaft to slightly advance or retard in terms of timing to allow for various outcomes like increased fuel economy and performance.

With most modern cars relying on VVT systems, this fault code can be logged in almost any vehicle. However, manufacturers like Land Rover, Subaru, and Volvo are some of the most commonly searched alongside this issue.

Warnings Icon Other Signs of This Problem

The signs of this issue can be relatively noticeable as they can directly affect the driveability of the vehicle.

The most obvious sign is the presence of the Check Engine light on the dashboard.

Driveability issues like decreased performance will also likely be noticed. These can include a loss of power when accelerating.

Additionally, the vehicle will likely suffer from lowered fuel economy as the engine is not running optimally.

Be sure to look out for fault codes relating to the VVT system. These can be codes like P0010 to P0250.

Broken Down Icon What Could Be The Problem?

The cause of this issue will typically be found within the solenoid circuit itself. This makes it very likely the cause is electrical in nature.

It is likely that the valve solenoid in question is defective, causing it to malfunction.

Additionally, the valve solenoid circuit may contain faults. These can be issues like damaged or frayed wiring and loose connections.

Another likely cause is low oil levels. This can result in the VVT system malfunctioning as it operates through the use of oil to actuate the various parts.

In rare cases, the PCM itself could be at fault. This can be a result of outdated software or defects. However, if this is the case, there will likely be other fault codes logged.

Fixed Icon Fixes

With any electrical component issue, it is likely the fix will require electrical know-how. It is also possible that this fault code will require mechanical skills when replacing parts.

One of the first steps to fix this issue is the check the oil in the engine. If the oil is too low, it should be topped up accordingly.

If there are any electrical issues in the solenoid circuit, these need to be fixed. Damaged or frayed wires and loose connections should be seen to.

If the solenoid itself is faulty, it should be replaced.

The variable valve lift system switch should also be checked for proper operation. If it is defective, it should be replaced.

If it can be determined that the PCM is at fault, it should undergo a software update or be replaced accordingly.

Danger Icon Seriousness

Fault code P0026 can be considered moderate to severe in terms of seriousness. There is no immediate damage at risk to the various components in the engine, but it can accrue over prolonged use in this state.

It is best to get this issue resolved as soon as possible.
