About the Frontier/Navara
The Frontier started life as a compact pickup truck in 1985 and remains on sale today as a mid-size pickup truck.
Known in the industry as the ‘D21’ the Frontier replaced the Datsun 720 and could be purchased in two body types, the ‘A’ or the ‘S’ King Cab, the latter having been designed in San Diego, California by Nissan’s own ‘Styling Studios.’
Success allowed for the first generations to run for 12 years when it was given an update in 1997, an update that was considered the first real generation of Frontiers.
For the Northern American market, production took place at the Tennessee plant and offered either a 2-door regular cab or as a 2-door King Cab.
Known internationally by 15 different names, including the Donfeng/ZNA Rich, the Giad Pick up or the Peugeot Pick-Up, the Frontier saw in 2000 with a new facelift with bolder styling and an advertising campaign designed to appeal to a younger demographic of drivers.
Currently in its third generation, the latest models launched in 2014 and were assembled at the new Samut Prakan Plant in Thailand following a $360 million investment.
There are now 4 engine types available for purchase, 2.5-liter petrol or the diesels; 2.3-liter turbo, 2.3-liter twin-turbo and a 2.5-liter.
Though popular, the Frontier does experience competition from other major car manufacturers and other pickups in this category are the Ford Ranger, Ford Transit, Great Wall Steed, GWM UTE, Holden Colorado, Isuzu D-Max, LCV T60 and the Mahindra Pik-Up.
