Description Icon Long Description

Fault code P0245 is logged when the engine’s primary computer, the powertrain control module (PCM), has detected an issue within the wastegate solenoid A circuit for the turbocharger system.

This code represents that the voltage in solenoid A of the wastegate is too low.

Turbochargers are a type of forced induction system that provides compressed air to an engine. This is typically done to increase the efficiency and power of a smaller engine.

The wastegate is necessary to control the flow of exhaust fumes to the turbocharger turbine. It purges excess gas from the turbocharger system as waste.

The wastegate solenoids are used to control the opening and closing of the wastegate valve, controlling the speed of the turbine.

Only cars with turbochargers can suffer from this fault code. Manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Subaru are some of the most commonly searched alongside this fault code.

Warnings Icon Other Signs of This Problem

There can be a number of noticeable issues when it comes to a fault with the wastegate solenoid.

One of the most obvious symptoms will be the Check Engine light on the dashboard.

Another likely outcome will be reduced performance as the turbocharger system is not functioning properly. This will likely be reduced power, specifically in the range where the turbocharger typically supplies boost.

In some cases, the vehicle will enter limp mode. This is when the vehicle is very limited in terms of performance, only being able to drive short distances. This is typically done to allow the vehicle to reach a place where it can be fixed accordingly.

There may be other turbocharger fault codes logged as well. These can be codes like P0234 to P0242. Additionally, there may be fault codes for the wastegate solenoid as well like P0243 to P0250.

Broken Down Icon What Could Be The Problem?

The causes for this issue will be found within the wastegate solenoid circuit, making it an electrical problem.

It is likely that there is a fault in the wiring of the circuit. These can be issues like damaged or frayed wires or loose connections. This is one of the simplest ways to cause a low voltage condition in a circuit.

It is also possible that the wastegate solenoid itself is faulty or defective. This can result in it functioning poorly.

In rare cases, the PCM itself could be faulty. However, this will likely have additional fault codes logged as well.

Fixed Icon Fixes

Fixes for this fault code will likely be electrical in nature. They will usually be done within the wastegate solenoid A circuit. It is a good idea to reset the fault code and perform a road test to confirm the issue.

If there are any faults in the circuit like damaged wires or loose connections, these need to be fixed.

Additionally, if the solenoid itself is defective, it should be replaced.

If there are no faults found within the circuit, the PCM should be checked. If the PCM is running on outdated software, an update should be installed. If the PCM is faulty, it must be replaced.

Danger Icon Seriousness

Fault code P0245 should be considered a fairly serious issue. The driveability of the vehicle will be hampered as the turbocharger cannot operate properly.

It is a good idea to have this fault code fixed immediately.
