Long Description

Fault code P0100 is logged when the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an issue with the mass airflow (MAF) sensor. This code is indicative of a general issue with the MAF or its sensor.

The MAF sensor is responsible for determining the mass of air that is coming into the engine through the intakes.

This information is sent to the PCM so that it can control the amount of fuel fed through the fuel injection system for the ideal air-fuel mixture in the combustion chambers.

Without the correct information being sent to the computer, the engine operations cannot be optimized. This results in decreased fuel economy and performance.

All vehicles are fitted with MAF sensors nowadays. This means any car can suffer this fault code. Manufacturers like Audi, Citroen, and Opel/Vauxhall are some of the more commonly reported to suffer from this fault code.

Other Signs of This Problem

There may be some noticeable changes when it comes to the performance of the vehicle as the PCM is unsure of the air-fuel mixture.

One of the most obvious signs will be the Check Engine light on the dashboard.

The performance of the vehicle will likely diminish as well. This can include things like stalling, as well as rough idling, and acceleration.

In some cases, the vehicle will struggle to even start or stay running just after starting.

Other MAF sensors could also be logged, including from P0101 to P0104. There may be lean and rich fuel trim codes logged like P0171 or P0172 respectively.

What Could Be The Problem?

The potential causes for this fault code are likely found within the MAF sensor circuit or its immediate surroundings.

One of the most likely causes is a dirty MAF sensor. This can easily cause a host of various MAF sensor issues.

Alternatively, a faulty MAF sensor can be the cause.

The sensor circuit can cause a variety of issues like this as well. Damaged or frayed wires and loose connections can mean the sensor does not function properly.

In rare cases, there may be an issue with the PCM itself. However, this will likely come with other fault codes. It is possible that the PCM is defective or running on outdated software.

Fixes

Fixes should focus on the MAF sensor and its circuit. A good first step is to reset the fault codes and perform a road test. If the code returns, it confirms that there is an issue.

Thereafter, the MAF sensor should be cleaned using a specialized cleaner. This can make for a relatively easy and cheap fix, so it should be tried first.

The MAF sensor circuit needs to be checked for faults. Any damaged wires need to be replaced. Loose connections need to be fixed.

If it is determined that the MAF sensor is defective, it needs to be replaced.

The PCM software should be checked for updates and installed accordingly. If the PCM is defective, it needs to be replaced. Again, this will likely involve various other fault codes being logged.
