About the Sorento
The first generation of the Sorento sold onwards from 2002 as a truck-based body-on-frame vehicle.
All units sold in the United States came fitted with dual front airbags and curtain airbags with the option to add four-wheel drive.
Just two trim levels were offered, the standard LX or the higher level EX. Available with 4 petrol engines or just one diesel, the Sorento shared the Hyundai-Kia N Platform along with the Hyundai Santa Crus, Santa Fe, Sonata, Staria, Tucson and the Kia Carnival, K5, K8 and Sportage.
Operators can often see a number of fault codes for the Sorento, some of which are:
- P0014 – A generic code pointing to the fact that the engine control module has found that the bank 1 exhaust camshaft is out of the desired range set by the manufacturer. Once this problem begins, it can lead to a number of unfavorable outcomes resulting in difficulty starting the engine, poor fuel efficiency or raised emissions meaning the vehicle will fail an emissions test. Results will vary depending upon the varying timing positions and several fixes may have to be performed before discovering the exact cause. When a mechanic receives a vehicle with this code, they may replace the oil and filter allowing for the correct viscosity, replace the camshaft oil or replace the timing chain.
- P0455 – There are a few noticeable problems that will lead to a fault code reading, namely a strange fuel odor, low fuel efficiency or simply that the check engine light has been illuminated. Leaks are primarily the cause, from a quick fix in replacing the fuel cap to spend in excess of $6,000 to repair the entire EVAP system.
