Description Icon Long Description

Fault code P0263 is logged when the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected that cylinder one is performing weakly.

This can be caused by a number of factors, mostly owing to an issue with the air-fuel mixture in the number one cylinder.

Internal combustion engines operate on an ideal air-fuel mixture of 14.7 parts of air to 1 part of fuel. This must be carefully maintained for proper performance and efficiency. If cylinder one is underperforming, it can be due to this.

Excess air and insufficient fuel are some of the most common causes for a cylinder to underperform in this way.

This code is part of a series running from P0261 to P0296.

Manufacturers like Ford, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen are some of the most commonly searched alongside this fault code.

Warnings Icon Other Signs of This Problem

The symptoms of a cylinder that is underperforming can be fairly noticeable when it comes to the driveability of the vehicle.

The most obvious sign will be that the Check Engine light will be illuminated on the dashboard.

There can also be a lack of power when driving. Additionally, the vehicle may run or idle roughly.

In some cases, cylinder one will misfire as well. This can cause P0301 to be logged. The engine will have noticeably decreased power during a misfire.

It is possible that other fault codes like this can be logged as well. These can be codes like P0261 and P0262 for cylinder one.

Broken Down Icon What Could Be The Problem?

The causes are likely to be found within the air-fuel mixture systems, causing underperformance in the cylinder itself.

It is possible that the fuel injector is not spraying the correct pattern, decreasing performance.

Ignition problems like a faulty coil pack can also cause this issue as there is insufficient heat for proper combustion.

A blockage in the fuel lines or a clogged fuel filter can also lead to insufficient fuel reaching the cylinder. A faulty or clogged fuel injector can also cause this.

A defective fuel pump can also cause insufficient pressure in the fuel lines, resulting in too little fuel in the cylinder. However, it is likely that this will cause more fault codes than just P0263.

Any air leaks in the vacuum can also lead to improper performance of the cylinder.

Fixed Icon Fixes

The fixes for this issue can be extensive, depending on the cause of the issue.

Any leaks in the vacuum need to be fixed.

The fuel system needs to be checked. It is possible that a fuel injector cleaner can be added to the fuel to clean any blockages within the fuel lines.

A dirty fuel injector needs to be cleaned further if a restriction remains.

If the fuel injector circuit is damaged, the wires and connectors need to be fixed. A faulty fuel injector needs to be replaced.

A failing fuel pump should also be replaced, along with a clogged or defective fuel filter.

Danger Icon Seriousness

Fault code P0263 should be considered a moderately serious issue. Running an engine like this can cause damage to other components over time. It also results in worse driveability.

It is a good idea to have this issue fixed as soon as possible.
