P0030 Fault Code

Long Description

Fault code P0030 is logged when the engine control unit (ECU) has detected a malfunction with the heater control circuit with the bank 1 oxygen sensor 1. This is the upstream heated oxygen sensor circuit specifically.

Heated oxygen sensors have internal heater systems to allow them to reach operating temperatures quickly as they monitor oxygen in the hotter exhaust system.

This fault code represents an issue with the heater control circuit itself.

Bank 1 refers to the side of the engine in which the number one cylinder is found. This applies only to V-shape engines. Straight or in-line engines only have one bank. Sensor 1 is simply the upstream sensor.

Most vehicles have these sensors, so any car can suffer from this fault code. However, Volvo, Ford, and Volkswagen are some of the most commonly searched alongside this fault code.

Other Signs of This Problem

There can be very few additional signs that there is an issue with the heater control circuit in an oxygen sensor. This means it is even more important to pay attention to the presence of the Check Engine light and the fault codes that have been logged.

In some instances, the vehicle may display reduced fuel economy. The engine may also have decreased performance.

Be sure to look out for other fault codes for this sensor. These can be codes like P0031 and P0032.

What Could Be The Problem?

The potential causes for this issue with the heater control circuit will typically be found in the circuit itself. Faulty components and poor wiring are some of the most likely causes.

A defective oxygen sensor can cause this fault code to be logged.

Circuit issues like damaged wiring or loose connections can also cause this issue. These will typically cause an open or short circuit. A blown fuse in the circuit is another possible cause.

In rare instances, a faulty PCM can be the cause of this issue. However, if the PCM is indeed faulty it will likely come with a host of other fault codes being logged.

It is also possible that the PCM needs a software update.

Fixes

Fixes will likely be electrical in nature as most of the causes can be found within the heater circuit itself.

It is a good idea to reset the fault code and perform a road test. If the code is logged again, there is more required to fix it.

The oxygen sensor should be tested. A defective oxygen sensor should simply be replaced.

The wiring and connections should also be checked. If there are damaged or frayed wires, these must be repaired. Connections should be fixed firmly and free from damage.

If there are none of the above issues, it may be the PCM at fault. The PCM should be updated if possible.

If the PCM is faulty, it should be replaced.

Seriousness

Fault code P0030 should be considered low in terms of seriousness. There is no immediate risk to the vehicle and driveability typically will not be affected.

It is recommended to have this issue solved within a few weeks. This is mostly due to poor emission levels and decreased fuel consumption.
