Description Icon Long Description

Fault code P2106 is logged when the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a reason to limit the power output of the engine.

This is typically done to protect the various components and systems from something that could cause significant harm to the occupants or the vehicle itself.

Forced limited power, also called ‘limp mode,’ is one of PCM’s primary failsafe methods used to prevent further harm to the engine. This is done to protect the vehicle, while still ensuring that the occupants of the vehicle have the ability to get off the road and back home safely.

An important differentiator of this code from other codes is that it almost always indicates that there is another code present, rather than representing its own problem.

This code has reportedly affected manufacturers like Ford, Kia, and Hyundai most commonly.

Warnings Icon Other Signs of This Problem

Because of the serious nature of this fault code, there can be a bevy of very noticeable symptoms.

One of the most obvious signs will be the presence of the Check Engine light on the dashboard.

Another very clear sign is the huge loss of driveability. This typically includes massively reduced power and limited driving range. However, these can change depending on the manufacturer in question.

Another relatively common sign is that the vehicle will not drive at all.

This code is typically a preventative measure when another serious code is logged. Be sure to look for other fault codes that have the potential to cause a limp mode condition. These can include codes like P0010, P0217, P0234, and more.

Broken Down Icon What Could Be The Problem?

As mentioned, this code is typically always the result of another underlying problem that poses a significant threat to the vehicle.

Critical systems like the crankshaft and camshaft timing systems, forced induction, cooling systems, and others are some of the most likely causes for the vehicle entering limp mode. However, this is certainly not an exhaustive list of potential causes.

In some cases, there may be electrical faults with the control module causing the issue. This will also likely be logged alongside additional fault codes that can show that the module is malfunctioning.

Fixed Icon Fixes

The first step in fixing this issue is ensuring that the code is accurately indicating a problem. Clearing the code and taking the vehicle for a road test is the best way to do this. If the code is logged again, it means there is something more significant at work.

Any other codes that are logged need to be fixed first. If there are multiple codes, it is a good idea to do some research to find which of these codes has the potential to force the vehicle into limited power mode.

Danger Icon Seriousness

Fault code P2106 is a serious problem. By putting the vehicle into limited power mode, the driveability of the car is massively degraded. It also indicates that there is a serious underlying problem that necessitates limited power.

It is strongly recommended to have this code and its underlying issues be fixed immediately.
