Fault code B1342 is a body-specific code that is logged when the body control module (BCM) has detected an issue with the engine control unit (ECU).
The ECU is also called the engine control module (ECM). It is responsible for controlling a huge array of onboard systems throughout the vehicle. Almost everything that is a part of the powertrain is controlled by the ECU.
This fault code indicates that the ECU is defective, which can cause all of the systems that rely on it to fail or behave erratically. In reality, this fault code indicates that there is likely a fault within one of the control module circuits, including defective controllers.
Certain Ford models have become fairly commonly associated with this fault code. Unlike some other generic fault codes, the American car company is almost exclusively searched along with B1342.
Other Signs of This Problem
The symptoms of this issue will range greatly depending on the issue at hand. Some vehicles will be heavily affected by this code.
One of the most obvious signs will be the presence of the Check Engine light on the dashboard.
Depending on how severe the issue is, there can be serious symptoms. For instance, if the anti-lock braking system (ABS) is compromised, the vehicle will display poor braking.
In some cases, the engine will perform poorly. This can include reduced power when accelerating and increased fuel consumption.
Look out for other fault codes that relate to the ECU. These can include P0607, U0100, or U0115.
What Could Be The Problem?
The cause for this issue will typically be located somewhere within one of the relevant circuits.
Very often, this code is caused by aftermarket electrical components that have recently been installed. This can be caused by damaged wires and connections. Short circuits can also result in this.
Another common cause is abnormal voltages being sent to the controllers. This can easily cause damage to the controllers, which means this fault code can be logged.
In some cases, issues with the ABS controller can cause this fault code. However, this will typically come with various braking issues. This can help pinpoint the cause of the problem with the ABS control module.
Additionally, a faulty power steering module is also a fairly common cause of this problem. This will typically be accompanied by difficult steering capabilities.
Fixes
The first step in fixing this fault code is being able to find the cause, which can be an exhausting task.
All of the relevant circuits need to be checked for damage or electrical faults. Any damaged wires and loose connections need to be fixed.
Any faulty control module must be replaced. Special attention should be given to the ECU. software should also be checked for any updates.
New aftermarket parts should be temporarily replaced by their original counterparts in an attempt to determine if new parts have caused this fault code.
Seriousness
Fault code B1342 is considered a serious issue. The ECU is responsible for controlling several critical systems throughout a vehicle. This means the performance, driveability, and safety of the vehicle can be severely hampered when this fault code is detected.
It is recommended to have this fault code fixed immediately to restore the working condition of the vehicle.
